A recent genetic test conducted using Affymetrix has shown that in more than eighty percent cases it was effective in predicting as to whether a particular drug would be effective in treating a particular kind of cancer. It has been reported that companies like Schering and Invitrogen are experimenting with carbon nanotubes, quantum dots and unique nanoscale materials for manufacturing contrast agents which have a bright shine, last for a longer period of time and offer more stability in the body.

It is expected that this would enable doctors in detecting tumors quite early and ensure that the treatment starts earlier and hence turn out to be more effective. This would also help in increasing the survival rate and hence there would be less number of deaths.

Nanotechnology is a promising field and some of the nanoparticles can attach to cancer cells and due to their extreme small size penetrate them and hence get to know how they function and help the medical field in finding a cure for them.
