It all started some 150-years ago when physicist James Clerk Maxwell imagined an atom sized device which he named as Maxwell’s Demon. Now this imagination has finally met realism as scientists at the University of Edinburgh have developed a new motor mechanism for a Nanomachine. A Nanomachine is a tiny device whose parts consist of single molecules. The basic idea is taken from nature which uses these machines for everything from Photosynthesis to moving muscles. Now these scientists are also trying to unravel the secrets of these machines which measure just one nanometer which is about 80,000 times smaller than the thickness of human hair. These machines don’t need any additional energy sources as they are powered by light. David Leigh who is one of the developers of the amazing technology commented that: While light has previously been used to energize tiny particles directly, this is the first time that a system has been devised to trap molecules as they move in a certain direction under their natural motion. Leigh has given all the credit of the research to Maxwell who was the first person to envision such great technology and that too 150 years ago. The new motor will enable the scientists to do things that are much closer to what biological machines do. Nanotechnology is already being used in cosmetics, computer chips, sunscreens, self-cleaning windows and stain-resistant clothing. Researchers have also commented that with the development in this technology we can say that human kind is nearing the biggest technological change that will completely change our life forever.
